Surgery avoided for a young child.

Child with bike

A low-income mother living in the community approached us for funding assistance in connection with a therapeutic tricycle for her 7-year-old son. Having cerebral palsy, the child needed this specialized equipment to avoid tendon surgery. The child's doctor suggested that use of this equipment would likely provide favorable stimulation, currently lacking in this child's life, to the boy’s developing muscles and tendons, thus avoiding the need for surgery. Medi-Cal had refused to authorize the equipment. We did some research to determine the appropriate size of the tricycle. Then we helped to fund its purchase. Several weeks later, the mother called us, thanking us for our help in avoiding surgery. She assured us that her son loved the equipment and was benefiting from its use.
